The History of Chinese Tea

The varieties .....
A teacup is a small cup with a handle which can be grasped between the thumb and one or two fingers and which is most often made out of porcelain, or sometimes referred to as china. The teacup forms the major part of a set that also comprises typically of a saucer and other components, and in turn, the tea set may in conjunction with a tea pot, have a cream jug, sugar bowl, and slop bowl in order to comprise a complete ensemble. There are many collectors who collect one-of-a-kind cups with matching saucers.

Of the better teacups found, most are typically made out of fine translucent porcelain and are also usually embellished with floral designs and can often even commemorate persons, locations, or events.

Some collectors may also add teaspoons made out of silver as an addition to these tea sets. Europe first used teacups which had been imported from Japan but these did not have any handles and so, these first teacups also had no handles and were made at Meissen.

The best way to hold the teacup is to hold it with the index finger which should hold the handle, and then balance and hold the handle with the thumb on top of the handle with the bottom of the handle resting on the middle finger. There are many different types of teacups available, but the most popular are the porcelain ones, though fine bone china is also incredibly popular.

The bone china teacup is made out of porcelain by adding ox bone, bone ash to kaoline and petuntse, though bone ash is a major constituent of the entire mixture formula that makes up the bone china porcelain. In this way, the translucence, whiteness and strength of the porcelain, is greatly enhanced.

It is Lomonosov bone china that is most found in any collector' s item list because of the increased airiness, lightness, transparency and elegance of this material. Individual teacups do not cost too much however, and starting prices may be from only ten dollars upwards to about twenty dollars. Besides porcelain, there are also ceramic and glass teacups available although the ceramic teacup may cost a bit more at thirty-four dollars approximately.

A unique teacup piece is one that resembles a goblet but which in fact only has a long glass wine stem, which makes one wonder whether it is the most ugly creation or if it is just plain cool, being the vessel of choice when a lazy tea drinker wants to have the least distance from cup to lip, or just a teetotaler' s wish to have their non-alcohol drinks served on a pedestal.
